British-built cars to become number 2 in Europe
21st June 2013
According to a national newspaper report, the UK could become the second biggest car maker in the EU within five years.
At the SMMT's (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) conference in London last week, industry experts suggested the UK's car industry could overtake France, second only to Germany, by 2018.
Figures from the European Automobile Manufacturer's Association show that 1.5 million cars were built in the UK in 2012, compared to France's 1.9 million. Industry sources have indicated that UK car production could reach 2 million per annum by 2018, while French car output is likely to continue its decline.
